A printer asks for a "vector file" and you send a PNG, and suddenly your logo comes back blurry on a banner three feet wide. This mix-up happens constantly because the difference between vector and raster images isn't obvious just from looking at them on a screen — but it matters enormously the moment your logo needs to scale beyond its original size.
Raster images: a grid of fixed pixels
A raster image — PNG, JPG, GIF, WEBP — is built from a fixed grid of colored pixels, like a mosaic made of tiny tiles. It has a set resolution the moment it's created. Zoom in far enough, or blow it up to a size larger than it was designed for, and those individual pixel tiles become visible, producing the blurry or blocky look often called "pixelation."
Raster files are ideal for anything displayed at a fixed, known size — website graphics, social media posts, email signatures, app icons — because they render exactly as designed and typically have smaller file sizes than an equivalent vector file.
Vector images: mathematical shapes, not pixels
A vector image — SVG, EPS, AI, PDF-based formats — stores a logo as a set of mathematical paths, curves and points rather than a grid of pixels. Because the shapes are recalculated every time the image is displayed, a vector logo can be scaled up to the size of a billboard or down to a favicon with no loss of quality whatsoever — the edges stay perfectly crisp at any size.
This makes vector files the standard requirement for professional printing — signage, vehicle wraps, embroidery, packaging — where the logo might need to appear at wildly different sizes across different materials, and any blurriness would be immediately obvious.

Which one do you actually need?
For most day-to-day digital use — a website header, a social media profile picture, an email footer — a high-resolution raster PNG with a transparent background covers everything you need. You only really need a vector file when:
- You're sending a logo to a professional printer for signage, packaging, or large banners
- You need embroidery or engraving, where the file needs to be recreated as clean outlines
- You're licensing the logo to a partner who needs to resize it for their own materials
A practical rule of thumb
If you're not sure yet whether you'll need print materials, start with a high-resolution PNG (2000×2000px or larger) for everyday use, and only invest time chasing down a true vector file once a specific print project actually requires one. Keeping both on hand once you have them — a PNG for daily use, a vector master file saved separately — means you'll never be caught scrambling when a printer or vendor asks for "the vector version."
